Can Trolling Students Be Banned From Class?

Can Trolling Students Be Banned From Class

I recently read an article in the Chronicle of Higher Education by Emma Pettit (February 8, 2019, page A21) concerning a situation in which professors at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign discussed what to do when sharp, bitter language about a professor stops to be just virtual and on social media, and  the writer (a student) of this language decides to subsequently sit in the professor's classroom.

Jay Rosenstein, a professor of media and cinema studies has been bullied repeatedly for the passed year by a student who has posted 'very disparaging comments' about Prof. Rosenstein on social media-calling the professor a sexual predator and someone who is a danger to his students. The student also showed up at the Faculty Senate to criticize Prof. Rosenstein.

When the student registered for Prof. Rosenstein's class, Prof. Rosenstein went to his dean and the university police but the professor was told nothing can be done.

This case is now being followed in the Faculty Senate.

It is unbelievable that no action has been taken by the College to protect the professor as well as the student.
