How to Stop Bullying in the Workplace

Updated: Feb 6, 2019

How to Stop Bullying in the Workplace

In another article (Jacoby, 2016), we learn that 35% of workers in the United States have been bullied. Since this is a sizable percentage it appears that it is probably a higher percentage in 2018, since this deals with reported cases in 2016.

Let's think of some positive steps  to stop bullying in the workplace:

  1. Familiarize yourself with bullying behavior. What does bullying look like? Repeated verbal humiliation, unwanted critique, isolation, exclusion, and sabotage.

  2. Recognize targets of bullying behavior: People who are skilled at their jobs, favorites of management, those not particularly aggressive, people who don't interact in group settings.

  3. Focus on your job performance and avoid negative comments from others that are unrelated to the job. Managers should encourage their staff to provide positive constructive critique regarding the task at hand.

  4. Promote a positive workplace climate as a manager. A manager's leadership will set the tone for how other employees should behave.

  5. Investigate complaints immediately. Do not ignore complaints or hearsay conserning bullying. The longer a manager waits, the more damage to the target and more liability to the company.

  6. Provide sensitivity training to all employees. Your employees need to understand what bullying is and how to recognize it. How to investigate a bullying occurrence and maintain confidentiality.

  7. Encourage a zero-tolerance for workplace bullying. Very often the bullies are the managers and supervisors and this encourages a culture of bullying.

  8. Identify the incident as bullying-not as incivility, disrespect or management style. Do not trivialize the workplace bullying incident.

Let's work together to promote these eight points so that workplace bullying is ended in your organization.
