More Than One Fourth of Female Undergraduates Experience Sexual Misconduct

An interesting article in the October 25, 2019 edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education describes that  'More Than 25% of Female Undergrads Experience Non-consensual Conduct' while enrolled in college. Generally, those students who are affected, do not report it nor find campus resources to address such issues, according to a survey conducted by the American Association of American Universities (AAU).

Compared to 2015 when the last survey was administered by the AAU -now a larger share of undergraduate students know the definition of sexual assault, where to get help and how to report it. However, overall seeking resources on campus is still an overall problem.

Although colleges are making efforts to educate all students about sexual assault, the colleges need to reach out more, to students affected by such circumstances, and to encourage students to come forward. Some of the methods that the survey suggested for coming forward were, contacting counseling centers, contacting Title IX officers, contacting campus police or consulting with local law enforcement.

It is possible that students need to be educated more in how to report sexual assault or harassment. We need to encourage our students to become Upstanders and not Bystanders in general and to help them become more confident of themselves.
