Statistics on Student Bullying

I read the following unbelievable statistics in StopBullying.gov (2014) about our students:

Bullying Experienced

28% of US students experience bullying in grades 6-12

20% of US students experience bullying in grades 9-12

Approximately 30% of our youth admit to bullying others in surveys

Bullying Witnessed

Bullying witnessed, bystanders, cyberbullying, types of bullying, upstanders
Statistics on Bullying

70.6%  of our youth have witnessed bullying in their schools

70.4% of school staff have witnessed bullying in their schools

If bystanders became upstanders and reported bullying incidents, the bullying would stop

57% of the time!

Cyberbullying Experienced

9% of students in grades 6-12 experienced cyberbullying.

We also need to be careful about making a causal inference between bullying and suicide because it is not always the case that people who are bullied become suicidal. There are many risk factors for committing suicide, and we must be careful making implications here. However, if someone is bullied, this can lead to feelings of isolation, rejection, exclusion, depression, anxiety, etc. which can serve as contributing risk factors for suicidal behavior. We need to stop these behaviors immediately starting with our schools--so these behaviors do not continue into our workplaces.

behaviors immediately starting with our schools--so these behaviors do not continue into our workplaces.

Do we ever wonder why people are bullied in the workplace and why there are bullies and targets in our work environments---should we not have education and sensitivity training at the workplace and in our schools to stop this kind of behavior?

There must be an END TO BULLYING!
