Stop The Gaslighting of Nurses!

Gaslighting is a technique used by managers and directors to control their staff. In the healthcare field, such actions from your boss can confuse their staff of nurses, and ultimately impact negatively on patient care. Here are some of the actions a gaslighter boss will do (Ciocco, 2019):

  1. Pretend not to see you, nor acknowledge your work and efforts, and at the same time shower you with compliments.

  2. Change project guidelines for their staff-at whim-confusing the staff.

  3. Invade your privacy by listening to your conversations, reading your mail, following you around.

  4. Tell you one thing and deny that it was said.

  5. Humiliate you in front of other staff members.

  6. Not fair to all members of the staff and prefer favorites.

  7. Give the impression they are listening to what you say, but doing and thinking something else at the same time.

  8. Gossip about staff members and lie about staff member's work or contributions to help a patient and improve the patient's condition.

In essence if such behaviors are exhibited by your boss on the unit---this can affect one's self-confidence and focus. Patients' health care will likely be impacted by nurses who are affected by such employers who micromanage and make up rules and procedures for different staff members.

We need to stop such gaslighting techniques in our working environments. Document everything and surround yourself by colleagues who value your work potential and appreciate you as a person.

Such behaviors in the workplace need to be stopped!
