Why Does Workplace Bullying Really Occur

Updated: Feb 6, 2019

I read an article recently about why bullying occurs. For children and adolescents we find bullying behavior is 'rooted in the discrimination of someone seen as culturally or physically different or socially less.' Adults who bully adults do not have these reasons for bullying necessarily, but tend to target those perceived as threats.Bullying is basically seen  as a 'top-down' hierarchical approach that encourages a culture of incivility often manifested through overt and covert forms of aggression dealing with interpersonal mistreatment and harassment.' Especially in academic settings where people challenge power bases 'incur marginalization and targeting.' Hierarchical settings reinforce a culture of humiliation and antagonization often with abusive and repressive actions.

Those in hierarchical settings like doctors vs nurses or deans vs professors must engage in behaviors that do not reflect bullying. This is why a bullying prevention statement ought to exist in our workplace settings. Do you think this will help?
