Challenging bullying is a difficult proposition on a job, especially, where it is accepted, and it occurs as part of the workplace climate. However it is significant to confront bullying at the earliest convenience. If it is left alone-there occurs more stress for both the target and bystanders, and possibly more costs for the workplace. The more it occurs, the harder it is to control. The target wrongly feels that the pressure of being bullied is often correct because supervisors 'know everything.' Sometimes the target does not speak up because the target feels that people will not believe him/her. This does not follow the regular risk assessment approach that deals with a hazard like bullying.
The only way to stop the bullying is to ensure that bullying does not become part of the accepted culture and that limits for behavior are instituted.
The Health and Safety Executive Five Steps to Risk Assessment and how it applies to bullying is described as follows: 1. Identify the hazard or incident that causes harm, like bullying.
2. Decide who might be harmed and how generally the bully and the bystanders.
3. Estimate the chance of harm and identify ways to avoid or reduce risk-this will help set priorities-and determine measures to be put into place to avoid such risks.
4. Record and apply the findings, assess the situation and include results of who is at risk by the behavior or situation.
5. Review the assessment and update as necessary-are the measures working to combat bullying?
We MUST stop the trend of bullying in our workplaces.
