WorkSafeBC is the Workers' Compensation Board of British Columbia (Benefits Canada, 2016) better known as WorkSafeBC agency, that deals with the enforcement of the Workers' Compensation Act in British Columbia. Many jurisdictions in Canada require companies to implement violence and harassment policies including those dealing with bullying. Sometimes it is difficult to apply these laws to actual cases.
According to WorkSafeBC, they define workplace bullying through behaviors that 'constitute bullying:'
Verbal aggression or insults, calling someone derogatory names
Vandalizing personal belongings
Sabotaging someone's work
Spreading malicious gossip or rumors
Engaging in harmful or offensive initiation practices
Physical or verbal threats
Making personal attacks based on someone's private life or personal traits
Making aggressive or threatening gestures
To provide guidance WorkSafeBC indicates situations that are NOT bullying:
Expressing differences of opinion
Exercising management authority through feedback to employees or providing work instruction
Don't you wish we had bullying legislation in the United States?
